WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Please see What is Bowen Therapy?

WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM BOWEN THERAPY?

There is no situation where Bowen therapy cannot be used safely and effectively to encourage the body to heal itself. It can be used to treat people of all ages, from babies to the more elderly and of varying levels of fitness, health and wellbeing.

Some people have Bowen therapy as part of a maintenance programme, designed to keep themselves ticking over and generally fit and well.
Other people come to Bowen because of an acute emotional, or physical injury or event, which is when it becomes a bit more problem/ solution in its application.

WHAT ISSUES/ CONDITIONS CAN YOU TREAT?

As Bowen therapists, we do not treat specific issues or conditions. We will discuss our client’s history, take the time needed to understand the current problems they are experiencing and tailor the treatment with that knowledge in mind, but that doesn’t change the fact that ultimately, we treat the body as a whole.

WHAT PROBLEMS RESPOND WELL TO BOWEN THERAPY?

Back and neck pain

Tightness and restriction in the shoulder blades

Respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies such as hay fever

Fibromyalgia

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM A BOWEN TREATMENT?

Duration

For your first treatment, you should allow for 60-75 mins to allow time for me to talk to you, take a history and fully understand the problem(s) you are experiencing. Subsequent treatments should be 45-60 mins long, depending on how your body reacts.

What to wear

Bowen therapy can be done straight onto the skin, but is just as effective if you want to wear light, loose, unrestrictive clothing.

During the treatment

I will repeat the same process throughout, which is that I will make a number of targeted moves and then leave the room, or at least make sure that I move well away from you for at least 2 mins, during which time your brain will begin to start processing the information received.

The treatment is largely done in silence. I will encourage you not to speak unless you really need to, as this creates the best scenario for your body to take the treatment on board. It also allows you to switch off and relax for a bit!

What happens afterwards?

Bowen therapy is known to activate the lymphatic system, so as with other forms of body work such as massage and physiotherapy, you should make sure that you drink plenty of water and keep mobile, avoiding sitting down for long periods of time. This will help the lymphatic system flush out any toxins from the muscles and organs in the body.

When can I expect to see/ feel a difference?

It is the individual’s body that will make any changes and each individual is different, therefore, it is impossible to say.

However, in the vast majority of cases, it takes the body a few days to effect change if it is going to. Therefore, it is sensible to avoid doing anything really testing and strenuous in the first few days following your treatment.

It is also not unusual to feel a little worse before you feel better as the body adjusts and rebalances.

Frequency of treatments

It is recommended that you have 2-3 treatments initially which will be scheduled 7-10 days apart. After that, we can discuss it and I will recommend how frequently you should consider having top up sessions, based on your individual needs.
