DARK SHADOW BOY – OLLIE

On Thursday 8th March 2018 Ollie sustained a massive injury. A 2” nail went through his back left hoof. The nail went through the frog, punctured the deep digital flexor tendon and pierced the navicular bursa. After an emergency operation and a week’s recuperation in hospital, he was back home 7 days later with a large boot, a stoic look on his face and 4-6 months slow rehabilitation ahead of him.

Jo started treating him the day after he arrived and continued weekly for the next 6 weeks. Having seen the massive improvement in fluidity of movement, balance and general all-round confidence and calmness when he was well, I have absolutely no doubt that the Bowen treatment (along with increasing levels of exercise) has significantly speeded up his recovery. After 12 weeks I am hacking out and trotting, albeit in short spurts, most days. Whilst we still have a long way to go, we are 3 months ahead of schedule.

As an ex hunt Master’s horse, Ollie can be a bit bossy and grumpy at times, especially when he’s being asked to do things he doesn’t particularly want to do. But Jo seems to have a way of working, a confidence and surety that he likes and above all respects. I’m also convinced that his overall good nature and positive demeanour during the difficult past few months (when most horses would have gone stir crazy) has been helped in large part by the Bowen treatments he’s been having.

BECKY

Jo treated me before, during my pregnancy and after I had my baby. I had several different complaints throughout the year (relating to a running injury, insomnia and usual pregnancy complaints; such as backache). Jo tailored each treatment to suit my needs at the time.

I managed to continue running until I was 36 weeks pregnant; I truly believe that Bowen helped my knee and back, even with the increasing weight (!) I was pretty much pain free and managed to keep fit and active.

Jo is hugely knowledgeable about the body and clearly passionate about Bowen therapy. She is friendly and the therapy sessions are relaxing and comfortable.

MARLEY

This has been a disappointing start to the process, but I was not prepared to continue to use the saddle after looking at it, in conjunction with the photos of Marley and myself during the first treatment visit on Sunday. I cannot assess how he feels to be ridden until the saddle fitter can come, but behaviourally, he completely laps up the treatment and has been very calm in the last few days.

Bowen is going to help me long term as I was unaware that I was so wonky, even when riding, so this will help my horse.

SPOT

Spot has seemed very chilled this week. He has had Bowen before which he has had varying reactions to. This time, he seemed to soak it up very quickly and has remained calm for the entire week.

Going through this process has made me aware of the issue with his left side and the need for me to help him with that.

Each week has resulted in me feeling immediately better in that I have less pain and more movement. I have also been sleeping better despite this having been a really stressful, far from ideal period. The Bowen definitely made me feel less pain when riding.

JOHNNY

Bowen therapy had a really positive effect on Johnny’s way of going, he felt super soft, elastic and totally energised after his treatment. Jo had a really kind mannerism around Johnny (often nervous around new people), he relaxed beautifully into the therapy and seemed to thoroughly enjoy it!

GALAXY

I would recommend Jo without hesitation. After her treatment, my mare was much more settled in the contact and felt increasingly relaxed and free over a fence. In addition, she appeared to enjoy the process, interacting with Jo and was utterly relaxed. Until I met Jo, I had not heard of Equine Bowen, but now I firmly believe there is a place for it in the maintenance of competing horses.
